Adhesions then cause blockages in circulation, pain, limited mobility and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by physically separating those largely stuck tissue parts in order to reduce pain and restore normal range of motion. In order to do this, the therapist uses very little to no massage oil so that grasping, stretching or specific and accurate access to the desired area is possible because the oil slides and does not allow grasping, especially does not allow deep manipulation of soft tissue.

Many people, including many misinformed or poorly trained massage therapists, believe that Swedish massage or similar types of massage that are performed with firmer and more powerful pressure are the same as Deep Tissue Massage, which is completely incorrect. It is not an effective deep tissue technique, and the use of the term Deep Tissue in this case is misleading and leads to a misinterpretation and perception of Deep Tissue Massage. Most often, Deep Tissue techniques are applied to one or two areas of the body during an otherwise relaxing treatment such as a Swedish massage, but in this case it is only an incidental component and such a treatment still cannot be called a Deep Tissue treatment.
